If Wednesday evening had a “star” it was Neuser. A very fine trumpet player, he has a fondness for using various kinds of mutes to muffle and attenuate his instrument’s range.
The trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser … conjures up atmospheric images of New York with a warm tone.
“Fables Of Faubus” is filled out by some exceptional mute-work by Neuser
[his] drive, expression, stunning experiments, research of strange tunes, expansion of technical abilities bring huge range of colors to his improvisations.
Nikolaus Neuser’s trumpet strategy ranges from sky high brassiness to mellow muted dissolve
One of those bright horns is trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser, a steady force in both the Dolphy and Mingus projects.
None of this would be possible without the phenomenal chops of these musicians. Both Eberhard and Neuser are capable of playing squarely in the pocket and also venturing out into the extremes of improvisation as well, although always in service to the music. They have an outstanding rapport, really digging into simultaneous solo passages that complement each other perfectly.
Trumpeter Nikolaus Neuser continues his upper-range squealing, but the rest of the band—and eventually, Neuser as well— settles down into a real swinger around the two-minute mark, and the band really takes off.
